Barclays traces its origins back to 1690, when a goldsmith banking business was established in London’s Lombard Street by John Freame and Thomas Gould. Freame’s son-in-law, James Barclay, became a partner in the bank in 1736, although the name Barclay and Co was not adopted until 1896. By 1925 Barclays had established operations in various countries overseas including South Africa and Egypt, with India following in 1938 and the USA in 1965. Over the years Barclays has been responsible for a series of firsts: in 1966 it launched Barclaycard, which was the first credit card in the UK, and a year later it unveiled the world’s first cash machine at its branch in Enfield. In 1987 it launched the UK’s first debit card. Today the business operates as two clear divisions: Barclays UK and Barclays International.
Barclays’ most popular products are its savings accounts; it is one of the chief savings providers in the UK. It is also well-known for its current accounts and mortgages. Further information about all Barclays’ personal banking products including how to register can be accessed on the company’s website or in any of its branches.
